Synopsis

City of Bones begins when fifteen-year-old Clary walks out of the Pandemonium Club in New York City. The last thing she expected was to witness a murder. Even stranger, the murderers are teenagers covered in tattoos with weird weapons. But the mystery surrounding the event deepens when the body disappears. Within a day, Clary Fray is pulled into the world of Shadowhunters (warriors tasked with getting rid of demons on the earth) when her mother is kidnapped, and a demon attacks Clary. The question is why are demons interested in Clary and her mother, and how is she able to see them?

City of Bones Parent Guide

Overall: PG-13 For Violence

Violence: PG-13 For battle sequences with demons and other fantastical creatures

Language: PG

Adult Content: PG-13 For a few intense kisses

Reading Level: Grade 6 – YA

This book has a gay couple. The fantasy violence in City of Bones is similar to a Harry Potter movie or Lord of the Rings. This is the first book in a six-book series. Cassandra Clare has done a great job with world-building and creating her magical system. This low-fantasy book set in the real world allows readers to fall into a new world. City of Bones opened up a new world of fantasy for me when I was a middle schooler and I can’t wait to share this amazing story with everyone.
